Third Grade
Reading Support
- Your student comes to reading support as either: (1) part of the PA Act 69 Early Intervention Program. They entered the Pilot Program in Kindergarten, and are now in their fourth year in Third Grade or (2) based on assessment scores from the beginning and middle of the year and weekly progress monitoring data from classroom teachers.
- We focus on multisensory phonics instruction using MSLE- Multisensory Structured Language Education. This instruction incorporates multiple senses and multiple pathways to the brain at the same time, which helps us learn and remember better. We practice the skill taught in their classroom using the Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Method.
- The components of this lesson include:
- * A warm up with card pack and phonemic awareness activities
- * Spell sounds and spell words
- * Read words and read connected text, usually a short story focusing on the target skill to increase fluency and comprehension.

- In third grade, we also work on comprehension and PSSA preparation. We reinforce the comprehension skills learned in the classroom with additional practice as well as cover information that will be on the PSSA assessment.
